Roots Unlimited – Runner Records – 1977
A decent horn led instrumental dub that features on both sides of this 7″ record released in 1977 on the Runner record label…
Roots Unlimited did have an earlier release entitled ‘Green Bay’ on Runner Records from 1976, a year before this release. The single is not related to the local JLP gang members who were shot and killed by the Jamaican Defence Force in 1978, the ‘Green Bay Massacre’. Many reggae artists did capture this infamous massacre, singing or chanting from the recording studios pressed onto vinyl and distributed around the island, but Roots Unlimited’s ‘Green Bay’ being recorded and released two years prior, was not one of these protest records.
I do not own that record so it is not on this YouTube post, it would have been nice to have both the 7″ vinyl’s back to back on one YouTube post, but that ain’t happening!
Roots Unlimited, the studio band, I know nothing about. So this horn led instrumental dub will need to do all the talking for me!
If anyone does have any information on Roots Unlimited, then please feel free to leave a comment and will add that information to this description…
P.S: I could have placed a cleaner sleeve on the record, and in fact I have other ‘Record Specialist’ sleeves in decent condition, but I thought I would stick with, and scan, this grubby torn apart sleeve as, to me at least, it is strangely aesthetically pleasing…
