Edmond Montague Grant was born on 5th March 1948 in Plaisance Guyana, not normally associated with reggae.
However, he also worked as a songwriter and producer for other artists, including the Pyramids (later Symarip) and even Prince Buster having written `She Was A Rough Rider’. He also launched and the Torpedo record label with Lambert Briscoe and released British-made reggae singles including Winston Groovy’s, `Please Don’t Make Me Cry’.
Later releases included hits from Gregory Isaacs (All I Have Is Love), Ken Boothe (Lady With The Starlight), Johnny Osborne (Put Away Your Gun) and Marcia Griffiths (Survival) to name just a few. He also produced the Gladiators for Virgin’s Front Line label as well as is his brother Rudy (as the Mexicano) for the chart topping `Move Up Starsky.’
In addition to his association with reggae he was a founding member of The Equals, one of the United Kingdom’s first racially integrated pop groups. They released a series of hits including `Black Skin Blued Eyed Boys’ and `Baby Come Back’. His subsequent solo career included the single `Living On The Front Line’ which led to a series of international hits. Here he performed the song incorporating the `Front Line Symphony’ echoing the guitar skills of Jimi Hendrix.
He also pioneered the genre ring bang, a Caribbean fusion of music genres.
