In this song Fikir Amlak says: What is my reflection, if not the whole creation. We are old souls inna beautiful light, essence is love, eternal over time, I am the one you forgot you are, don’t you remember way before the first star, I am the one you forgot you are, limitless and everywhere from near and far.
Profound lyrics like these push me to ask myself the age-old-questions ‘who am I?’ and what is the Divine? I have no idea, but I’ll share with you my own process of ‘self-inquiry’ I often use to at least pose the questions;
Who Am I?
To find out who we are, I believe we must first find out who and what we are not. Shed the illusion of identity and find out what remains.
The Body
Start with the body, as this is the easy one. Ask, am I the body? Language helps clarify this, as we refer to the body as ‘mine’; my arm, my leg, my body. This already suggests that you are in fact not the body, but rather the body belongs to you. Moreover, if you lose a part of the body, do you lose a part of who you are? If you trim a toenail is your self diminished? The body is a wonderful thing, a gift, but I think most would agree that it does not define you.
The Mind
So if I’m not the body, then I must be the mind. Let’s try and find out. This time it’s a little more tricky as we must use the mind in order to question whether or not we are the mind. Well let’s break it down, the mind consists primarily of thoughts, opinions, judgements, memories and projections all based on past experience, education and conditioning. These aspects of the mind define our personality, but do they actually tell us who we are? When you were a newborn baby, you didn’t have these aspects of mind, you had no experiences or memories upon which to orient your thoughts, you were simply aware. But even in this state, you were still you. Also if you consider the three states of consciousness, the waking state, sleep and deep sleep; during the day your mind is very active so it becomes very easy to identify unreservedly with the mind, during sleep your mind is also active in a dream state. However, during deep sleep the mind is no longer active, it effectively shuts down, but, you are still alive, your body is still functioning, you are still you. So this suggests that… well maybe we’re not the mind after all.
What Remains?
So if we’re not the body, and we’re not the mind, then who am I? Well, I don’t think anybody can show you or tell you who you are… you must experience it. But I do believe, from my own experience, that if we cease to identify with the body and mind, even for a short time, we can rediscover who we are. We can then see with great clarity, that actually ‘who I am’ is no different from who anybody else is, quite simply, you are life, pure awareness, consciousness. We are what remains. This simple remembering is good news for humanity because it weakens the constructs of ‘us’ and ‘them’ and therefore creates fertile ground for cultivating compassion. Of course, as a newborn baby you already knew this, so this is no great discovery, this is a humble rediscovery, this is your Newborn Knowledge.
We are divine.
