Gregory Isaacs ~ The Border (Live With lyrics)
Gregory aka the Cool Ruler was born in Fletcher’s Land, Kingston, Jamaica, on 15 July 1951. He initially performed on the talent show circuit and through Byron Lee he recorded alongside Winston Sinclair for the classic, `Another Heartbreak.’ Sadly when the song debuted in the UK Gregory wasn’t credited, but you can’t keep a good man down. He later performed with the Concords for Rupie Edwards and released a series of low profile hits.
Frustrated by the lack of promotion he sought independence by setting up African Museum with Errol Dunkley and one of the label’s first releases, `My Only Lover’ proved so successful that it led to a series of chart toppers with a host of Jamaica’s top producers including Alvin GG Ranglin resulting in `The Border’ which was included on the modestly titled the `Best Of Gregory Isaacs,’and while it was not a compilation of hits it certainly introduced a host of classic hits.
His output is unprecedented with over 100 albums, and of course numerous hit singles. His superstar status continues to this day and in 2011 he was posthumously awarded the order of distinction by the Jamaican Government. He is probably best remembered for his crossover hit, `Night Nurse’ which led to an album of the same name and clearly demonstrates his cool ruler status, a reign that continued until his untimely demise in 2010.
